Shibuya Hikarie seeks to become a new super high-rise landmark in the town of by “stacking up” the diversity and bustle of its surroundings. The building is a multiple use facility housing offices, a 2,000-seat theater for musicals, a large 1,000 sqm event hall and a smaller 300 sqm event hall, creative spaces, restaurants, shops and other commercial facilities.
The building’s stack consists of blocks whose exteriors are defined by function. The blocks are connected by common-use deck and sky lobby space, so that office workers will mingle with those using other parts. The resulting synergies will transmit to the exterior the general liveliness of the building as a whole. The subdivision of the building’s volume helps to alleviate its rather overwhelming presence vis-à-vis the much smaller structures on its north and south sides. This is reinforced by promoting continuity and circulation between the building and the multiple public transit lines, and with deck areas linking to main streets.
