London Report: Bucking a Western Trend?
17 July 2011 - Event
Located on a prominent site on a sharp bend of the River Thames, the Tower is a cylindrical building providing luxury apartments. It is one of Europe’s tallest wholly residential buildings and the tallest residential tower in London. The unique floor plan concept is typically divided into five apartments per floor with separating walls radiating out from the central core. Sky gardens provide residents with a semi-external space, stepped forward from the pure circular plan; with floor-to-ceiling glazing providing staggering 360-degree views across London.
Despite its glassy appearance, the building uses significantly less energy than that of a conventional tall building. A sophisticated, ventilated cavity façade, with opening windows to reduce reliance on air conditioning, achieves significant CO2 emission savings over the building’s lifespan. Renewable energy sources are also utilized. Operable windows are provided in all habitable rooms, reducing reliance on air conditioning. A 10-meter-high vertical axis wind turbine crowns the structure, generating 27,000 kWh of energy per year, powering lighting in communal areas.
