Founded in 1890 as Armour Institute, Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is a private, Ph.D.-granting research university with programs in engineering, science, architecture, business, law, design, human sciences, and applied technology. IIT is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The IIT colleges network include Armour College of Engineering, Chicago-Kent College of Law, College of Architecture, Lewis College of Human Resources, College of Science, Institute of Design, School of Applied Technology, and the Stuart School of Business.

IIT has a Research Institute which is an independent, not-for-profit, contract research organization focusing on the life sciences. The University Technology Park at IIT is a state-of-the-art research park comprising laboratories, office buildings, and an incubator to assist science and technology start-ups.
